All
of our Wireless Driveway Alarm's radio range is measured and rated by their manufacturers. These distances vary from 1000' for the Optex RCTD10U, 3000' for the Dakota Alert 3000, 4000' for the Sure Action WP4CLR and and several miles for the MURS.
These
ratings are arrived by testing the systems over open level fields with
no obstructions. We have done our own tests on all major brands of Driveway
Alarms and have come to the following conclusions:
Like
any wireless product, such as a cordless phone, 2 way radio or even a
cell phone, the radio range greatly depends on the terrain, buildings,
trees and other obstructions. One thousand feet and even greater distances
may be achieved if the area is flat with few or no trees and buildings.
( We have customers using the Optex Wireless 1000 at 2000' over an open
field.) Depending on the density of the forest, the size and location
of buildings, you may only expect to achieve 1/4 of the rating through a heavy
forest and maybe even less if there are metal clad buildings in the radio
path. This would be true with any of the wireless Wireless Driveway
Alarms regardless of the manufacturer or their ratings. All of these
Wireless Driveway Alarm designs are controlled by FCC power regulations
and are limited to the amount of RF energy that may generated. We carry wired systems that may be used to even greater distances.

About MURS
MURS
(Multi-Use Radio Service) was authorized by the FCC in November of 2000
as a private, two-way voice or data communications service for personal
or business activities. The five MURS channels are available on a shared
basis only. No channels are assigned on an exclusive basis, therefore
it is up to the users to cooperate in the channel selection to help
avoid interference. FCC rules do allow for the use of external antennas
with MURS.
Who can
use MURS?
No license is needed. A person is authorized by rule to operate a MURS
radio providing he or she is not a representative of a foreign government.
Also, MURS can be used anywhere in the US except aboard an aircraft
in flight.
Range
You will notice that we describe the range of the MURS systems as several
miles. While this might sound a little vague, we are not trying to deceive.
Like the lower power 1000' systems the range will be dependent on your
local surroundings. The manufacturer has tested the MURS Systems over
flat ground to ranges of about 4 miles. However, if you are in an urban
area with many tall buildings, or in a heavily forested or hilly area
your range may be cut down significantly. |
